The 7 Principles & Spiritualism
The beginning of modern spiritualism occurred when an incident known as the ‘Hydesville Rappings’ occurred on the 31st March, 1848; this event helped form the basis of modern spiritualism. Kate and Magaretta Fox (aka the Fox Sisters) experienced a psychic phenomenon; they were disturbed by noises known as “rappings”. The Fox sisters used a series of handclaps to communicate with the Spirit of the so-called dead. These handclaps showed that Spirit could hear during these communications and when the sisters made silent handclaps spirit responded proving that Spirit could also see them. The sisters communicated with a spirit whom they named as "Mr Splitfoot", it was through the sisters hand clap system that Mr Splitfoot told them he was a peddler named Charles B Rosna who passed in 1843 and was murdered by a man called John C Bell; a former tenant of the house they lived in. It was some years later that his remains were found in the walls of the house in the basement. From those early humble beginnings to the forming of large spiritual organisations many people have found an awareness and understanding of the spirit world either through sittings, spiritual belief, experience or searching for knowledge. As Christian Spiritualist we believe and try to live our lives by The 7 Principles. These Principles were originally received through the mediumship of Emma Hardinge Britten in 1871 (one of the founders of the SNU) from Robert Owen who was a well known Welsh social reformer and philanthropist and one of the founders of socialism and the co-operative movement in the UK and America. He passed to spirit in 1858; his message containing the principles was given to Emma Britten some years later after his passing. Although when the original principles were received they were 5 in number, it was only later that the SNU (Spiritualist National Union) revised them for better understanding. | Principle 1: The Fatherhood of God
Principle 2: The Brotherhood of Man
Principle 3: The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels Principle 4: The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul
Principle 5: Personal Responsibility Principle 6: Compensation and Retribution hereafter for all the good and evils deeds done on Earth: Principle 7: Eternal Progress open to every Human Soul |
